How to Realize You’re in Control of Yourself

Remember the good ol’ days of grade school or even high school when the teacher was away for the day and we had a substitute teacher? Remember how we misbehaved when the teacher was away? There’s a really good reason for that. If there isn’t a heart to heart connection with the person of authority, as soon as they’re away we find freedom to make choices our way.

While you were growing up did you have the freedom to make choices or were you living in fear of being disciplined for making wrong choices or mistakes? Were you taught to love yourself or were you taught that there was someone else in power and it wasn’t you? As an entrepreneur you have an opportunity to help others finally see that they are in control of themselves.

For me I’m still struggling with the idea that I have control of my choices. I have a responsibility to be a leader for myself. There isn’t a person of authority making choices for me anymore. So consequently the fear I felt for making wrong choices has become fear of taking control or leading me. And since I’m still living in fear I’ve been taught that I can control others with fear too. If I’m afraid then you need to be afraid too.

I’d like to take the actions necessary to change that attitude. Have you ever heard the saying, how can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself? How can you lead others if you’re afraid to lead yourself? Take a look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you are the leader in your life and you are in control of your options and that you love yourself. Perfect love drives away fear, and fear in the same way drives away love. Cast away any fear you may be feeling and make way for better relationships with others.

The biggest lie we may have learned as children is that there is someone in control and there is someone who is not in control. We may not have realized it at the time but we were taught that there was someone in power, but it wasn’t us. So as we grew up we learned to be disrespectful and it hurt our relationships with people who should have been leading us. As soon as we were out of their presence we did whatever we wanted, like abusing the poor substitute teacher.

What would have gone differently if we felt there was respect in our relationships with our parents, teachers, friends or even a boss at work? Perhaps we would have found completing tasks more enjoyable as we were doing them for someone we loved, and that we were respected and trusted enough to make the right choices? We could then respect, trust and love ourselves much easier too.

As entrepreneurs it is not only our responsibility but we have the ability to take control of ourselves and become the leaders that others need to realize it’s okay to be in love with themselves. You could be guiding someone in the direction they need to go and think that they are taking the actions necessary to build their business and then realize they forgot to take control of themselves. Take a step back and instead of giving someone directions, give them support, trust and love to build a heart to heart relationship with them and help them realize they are intelligent and have the ability to make their own choices.

This way they will learn to love themselves and rather than being obedient and compliant they will want to protect a relationship with you and take action for themselves. Their goal shifts from worry that you will be disappointed in them to a goal of protecting your heart and relationship. If they aren’t able to complete tasks they need to build their business, help them to see that they are in control of their own choices. Maybe they learned that there was someone else in charge and it wasn’t them. Maybe they’re afraid to accept responsibility for themselves. Teach them that it’s okay to love themselves and that you are there to support and love them no matter what.

Watch them grow and enjoy living in the freedom of making choices for themselves. They will soon begin to take responsibility for their actions and own their inactions rather than trying to blame someone else. People need you to lead them away from fearing themselves. Become your own leader!
